What is slot volatility?

Volatility (or variance) describes how a slot pays out its RTP: low-volatility games pay small wins often; high-volatility games pay rarely but larger. Two slots can share the same RTP and feel completely different to play, high volatility means longer dry spells and faster bankroll swings.

Volatility is the difference between a game that drips and a game that lurches. We can show it with two of our studies at an identical $100 bankroll and $0.50 stake: high-volatility Wanted Dead or a Wild busted 81.3% of sessions in a median of 484 spins, while medium-volatility Le King busted 76.5% over a longer median. Same bankroll, same stake, the higher-volatility game emptied bankrolls faster and more often.

Higher volatility does not change the long-run RTP; it changes how brutal the ride is getting there.

FAQ

Does high volatility mean a bigger jackpot?

It usually means rarer, larger wins and longer losing streaks, bigger swings in both directions, not a guaranteed bigger payout.

Is low volatility safer?

Sessions last longer on average, but slots stay negative-expectation at any volatility.
